Human ancestors butchered, ate elephants 1.8 mn years ago: Study

Archaeologists studying early human evolution in Africa have identified one of the earliest cases of elephant butchery at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Dating back 1.8 million years, the site showed that early humans engaged with megafauna earlier than the previous estimate of 1.5 million years. The study found that early humans were butchering and eating elephants at the time.
