French authorities on Tuesday announced curfew in its territory, New Caledonia, and banned gatherings after riots erupted on the archipelago between indigenous Kanaks, who have been seeking independence from the country. Police reinforcements were also sent to the islands. New Caledonia was colonised by France in 1853 and it had served as a prison colony.
