Hilsa spotted in upstream Ganga decades after barrage cut off migration

Two hilsa fish were spotted in the Ganga River near Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur decades after their migration was restricted due to the Farakka Barrage. Hilsa's return to the upstream stretch indicates improving river health and ecological gains, as the fish is an oxygen-demanding migratory fish that only thrives in good oxygen levels. Hilsa used to migrate as far as Prayagraj.
