Portugal's last circus elephant, a female named Julie, has been freed and made the first resident at the country's Pangea sanctuary. Julie had arrived from Southern Africa at a very young age and joined the Cardinali circus in 1988, performing for around 40 years. She stopped performing when the country implemented a ban on wild animals in circuses in 2024.
