Over 7.8 crore income tax returns filed by August 31

More than 7.8 crore ITRs were filed for assessment year (AY) 2026-27 as of August 31, 2026, with over 5.71 crore processed, the Income Tax Department said. Filings rose from 5.83 crore in AY 2022-23 to 6.77 crore in AY 2023-24 and 7.29 crore in AY 2024-25. Over 7.3 crore returns were filed in AY 2025-26.
