Filmmaker Karan Johar recalled that he was once advised to take Dharma Productions public through an IPO, but chose not to. "My father had said, 'Don't do it...It's not in our...culture'," Johar said, adding, "Which is why I...said, 'I can't...I want to be accountable to very few people'." Johar had sold a 50% stake in Dharma Productions to Adar Poonawalla.
