Sawan Barwal, who ended India's 44-year wait for an Asian Games marathon medal by winning silver on Saturday, is an Indian Army athlete from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi. He took up running at school and won medals at the district and state levels before joining the Army in 2019. Barwal broke Shivnath Singh's long-standing marathon national record on debut in April.
