US forces set to exit Iraq after 23 years

US forces are set to leave their last bases in Iraq by September 30 ending a 23-year military presence that began with the 2003 invasion which toppled Saddam Hussein. American troops withdrew in 2011 but returned in 2014 to help Iraqi forces fight Islamic State. The latest withdrawal follows 2024 agreement between US and Iraq to end coalition's military mission.
