Bihar's Baya River, once declared nearly dead, revived by community efforts
short by Neeraja Nath / on Sunday, 28 June, 2026
The Baya River in Bihar, once declared nearly dead due to siltation and neglect, has been revived through a people-led conservation movement. Supported by government agencies, NGOs and local communities, extensive desilting and dredging restored the flow of the 212 km river. MGNREGA workers also contributed to desilting work, making the restoration project a source of rural employment.
