Scientists have revealed how the Bermuda Islands sit so high above the Atlantic Ocean, even after their volcanoes went quiet. By analysing seismic recordings, researchers found a layer of rock, less dense than the surrounding mantle, that sits just below the oceanic crust, making it unusually buoyant. This type of geological structure is unlike anything seen on Earth, they added.
