A 47-year-old Pakistani national, Asif Merchant, has gone on trial in US over an alleged plot to assassinate American political leaders, including US President Donald Trump, during the 2024 election campaign. Prosecutors told jurors that Merchant travelled to US in April 2024 and attempted to arrange contract killings ahead of presidential election. If convicted, he could face a life sentence.
