WhatsApp is now allowing users to choose optional usernames so that they can avoid sharing their phone numbers when they start a new chat with someone. Users can go to Settings, then select Account Settings and then click on Username to reserve a username of their choice that's available. Users can also claim their existing Instagram username on WhatsApp.
