120-mn-year-old part of Earth's mantle lost since break up of Pangaea discovered

Scientists have discovered a long-lost tectonic plate called Pontus, dating back about 120 million years, which used to be located in the region between Asia and Australia and covered one-quarter the size of Pacific Ocean. As the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart, Pontus was gradually swallowed by other plates. This process carried countries like the Philippines to their present-day locations.
