When should one consider closing an unused credit card?

Retaining an unused credit card can be more prudent than closing it, according to BankBazaar's Adhil Shetty. Cancelling a card reduces the total available limit, potentially increasing the credit utilisation ratio and affecting the credit score, he said. Unless it carries high annual fees, keeping it active with occasional responsible use can help maintain a strong credit history, Shetty added.
