The government has notified new quality standards for agarbattis (incense sticks). Under the revised norms, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has barred the use of several insecticidal chemicals and synthetic fragrance intermediates, citing risks to human health, indoor air quality and ecological safety. The banned substances include allethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin and fipronil.
