Iceland votes 'No' to EU membership talks, defers issue to 2028

Icelanders have rejected the government's proposal to resume European Union (EU) membership negotiations, with 52.8% voting against and 47.2% in favour of the referendum. Iceland applied to join the EU after the 2009 financial crisis severely damaged its economy. PM Kristrun Frostadottir, who campaigned for a "Yes" vote, said Iceland could move forward regardless of the outcome.
