Bacteria turn toxic uranium into stable chemical compound: Study
short by Neeraja Nath / on Monday, 13 July, 2026
A study found that bacteria can convert dissolved uranium in water into a stable chemical compound when they are given glycerol as food source. In an experiment, the uranium entered a pentavalent stable state called uranium(V). The bacteria incorporated toxic uranium into their cell walls. The study could support future research on the use of bacteria for environmental remediation.
