Swiss students build underwater robot to measure ice thickness

A team of 10 students from ETH Zurich, a public university in Switzerland have developed a robot that can measure ice thickness of frozen lakes from below the surface. The autonomous robot measures ice thickness using pressure sensors and sonar. The students said this eliminates the risk of people having to go on the ice themselves to measure its thickness.
