Satellite image shows rare snowfall turning Atacama desert white

Back-to-back winter storms in August 2026 brought rare, widespread snowfall to Chile's Atacama Desert, extending from the Andes to near the Pacific coast. NASA satellite images captured the unusual snow cover across the hyper-arid region. An unusually large atmospheric trough, abundant coastal moisture and strengthening El Niño contributed to the extreme precipitation.
