The Supreme Court said Dowry Prohibition Act criminalises both giving and taking of dowry but clarified that those who give dowry- typically bride and her family- will be protected from prosecution if they are the aggrieved party. The court's remarks came after a man sought FIR against wife and her family as they gave dowry at the time of wedding.
