The World Health Organization's (WHO) former Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan has listed several precautions that people can take to reduce risk of contracting Human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Those who have cold should wear masks, wash hands, avoid crowds and consult a doctor if symptoms are severe, she said. So far, at least five HMPV cases have been detected in India.
