How did the Venezuela earthquake happen?

Two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on Wednesday after the Caribbean and South American plates horizontally slid past each other. The earthquake began along Venezuela’s northern coastline, and the rupture then travelled eastward. The strongest seismic waves moved along the densely populated coastline, causing severe shaking in cities including La Guaira, Caracas, and Valencia.
