BBC closed its longwave radio service by switching off BBC Radio 4, the UK's last remaining longwave station, after nearly a century. The move was driven by ageing infrastructure and obsolete equipment. They played a key role in transmitting messages during World War II. Historians have sought protected status for the signals' transmitter, Wychbold masts, citing their historical importance.
