Bolivia declares state of emergency as protests shut down economy

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has declared a state of emergency after anti-government protests demanding his resignation brought the country's economy to a halt for 50 ⁠days. The move grants the military authority to clear blockades that have disrupted food and fuel supplies. Paz said the blockades were no longer a social protest but an organised attempt to destabilise Bolivia’s democracy.
