In 1991, a group called Visual AIDS chose red ribbon as symbol to demonstrate compassion for people with HIV. They were inspired by yellow ribbons honouring American soldiers serving in the Gulf war. Colour red was chosen for its, "connection to blood and the idea of passion -- not only anger, but love, like a valentine," Red Ribbon Project said.
