‘Death-Ball’ sponge found hunting prey with tiny hooks

Scientists have discovered a bizarre deep-sea sponge near Antarctica that hunts instead of filter-feeding. Nicknamed the “death-ball”, the newly identified Chondrocladia species traps small crustaceans using hook-like structures. Found 3,601 metres deep during an ocean census, the discovery challenges long-held assumptions about sponge behaviour.
