According to convention, the senior most Judge of the Supreme Court is appointed as the Chief Justice of India by the President. On 26 April 1973, Indira Gandhi's government broke this convention and appointed a junior judge, Shri A.N. Ray, as the CJI.The supersession was allegedly to punish the judges who ruled against the government in the Kesavananda Bharti case.
