A petition claiming that Aligarh's Jama Masjid was constructed on site where Buddhist, Jain and Hindu temples stood has been filed in an Aligarh Civil Court. The petitioner, Pandit Keshav Dev Gautam, claimed an RTI response from Aligarh Municipal Corporation revealed that it was "built on public land without government approval". Gautam sought takeover of land from mosque by government.
