Why do people have runny nose when it's cold?

In cold weather, when people breathe in, their noses warm the air and add moisture to it as it travels down into the lungs, according to Northwestern Medicine. Cold, dry air irritates the nasal lining and as a result, nasal glands produce excess mucus to keep the lining moist. This can result in runny nose.
