Scientists discover why South Pole froze over before the North Pole

Scientists at the University of Southampton found that the South Pole froze before the North Pole because the formation of the vast East Antarctic Ice Sheet created a permanent ice cap over Antarctica. The study traced this to plate tectonic movements, with the resulting continental shifts enabling major ice sheets to form around 34 million years ago.
