During the Budget 2026 presentation, the Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, insisted on the promotion of environmentally sustainable movement of cargo. For this, she proposed newly-dedicated freight corridors from Dankuni in West Bengal in the east, to Surat in Gujarat in the west. She further proposed operating 20 new National Waterways over the next five years.
