Scientists at the University of Edinburgh have found a one-pot microbial formula that uses breadcrumbs to replace fossil fuel-derived hydrogen in hydrogenation. Hydrogenation, a chemical reaction used in food processing, depends almost entirely on hydrogen gas made from fossil fuels. This discovery can enable bio-based manufacturing using renewable and waste-derived raw materials, scientists said.
