India’s crude oil production falls for seventh straight year

India's domestic crude oil production plunged over 4% in 2018-19, registering its seventh consecutive yearly fall. India produced 34.2 million tonnes of crude oil in FY19, down from 35.7 million tonnes in the previous year, according to data released by the government. Fields of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India missed production targets.

Martin Guptill retires from international cricket

Martin Guptill has officially confirmed his retirement from international cricket, having last played for New Zealand in October 2022. The 38-year-old will continue to feature in T20 leagues around the world. Guptill scored 7,346 runs in 198 ODIs and he is New Zealand's highest run-getter in T20I cricket with 3,531 runs in 122 matches.

4 dead, several injured in stampede at Andhra's Tirupati

At least four people died, while several others were injured in a stampede that occurred at Vishnu Nivasam in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati on Wednesday. The stampede took place during the distribution of Vaikunta Dwara Sarva Darshan tokens. Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu spoke to officials over the phone about the treatment being provided to the injured, his office said.

Filmmaker and writer Pritish Nandy passed away at the age of 73 on Wednesday. Nandy, who was also a journalist and humanitarian, hosted a talk show on Doordarshan in the 1990s called The Pritish Nandy Show where he interviewed celebrities. Anupam Kher condoled his demise and wrote, "He was my support system...in my initial days in Mumbai."

Rupee falls to all time low against US dollar

The rupee continued its downward trend for the second consecutive session, slipping 13 paise to reach a new record low of 85.87 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday. The decline was driven by rising crude oil prices and a strengthening US dollar. Analysts said subdued performance in domestic equity markets and persistent foreign fund outflows also impacted the rupee.
