Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced setting up a ship repair ecosystem for inland waterways in Varanasi and Patna at the Union Budget 2026 presentation. She further spoke about launching a 'Coastal Cargo' promotional scheme, aiming to incentivise a modal shift from rail to road and increase the share of inland waterways and coastal shipping from 6% to 12% by 2047.
