Hours after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from Bangladesh, General Waker-Uz-Zaman assumed control and announced the formation of an interim government. Zaman, a four-star general, took leadership of Bangladesh’s defence forces in June 2024. His father-in-law, Gen. Mustafizur Rahman, also served as Chief of Army Staff from 1997 to 2000 and was the uncle of Sheikh Hasina.
