Why is Pakistan slaughtering hundreds of donkeys daily for China?

Hundreds of donkeys are reportedly slaughtered daily at a Pakistani processing facility to meet Chinese demand. Their hides are especially valuable for making ejiao, a gelatine used in traditional Chinese medicine and some beauty products. Pakistan sees the trade as a source of exports, investment and jobs, and has signed sanitary protocols with China covering it.
