Bill to change Kerala's name passed in Parliament

short by Shalini ojha / on Wednesday, 12 August, 2026
The Parliament passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill 2026 to change the southern state's name to Keralam. In June 2024, Kerala Assembly had passed a unanimous resolution to change the state's name. It was argued that the Malayalam name is "Keralam" while Kerala is the name used in English. The Bill now needs President's assent to become a law.
