Portion of Charminar's minaret collapses amid heavy rain in Hyd

A portion of the northeast minaret of Hyderabad's Charminar collapsed during heavy rainfall in the city on Thursday. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials reportedly rushed to the spot following the incident. "Fortunately, no one was below the minaret at that time...ASI officials have told me the minaret isn't under threat," MLA from the Charminar constituency, Mir Zulfeqar Ali, said.

Canada becomes first country to retaliate to Trump's reciprocal tariffs

Canadian PM Mark Carney announced that Canada will impose 25% tariff on all vehicles imported from US that aren't compliant with US-Mexico-Canada trade deal. This makes Canada the first country to retaliate against reciprocal tariffs. US said tariffs announced earlier will be imposed on Canada but the latest reciprocal tariffs, imposed on about 60 countries, won't be effective, Carney noted.

Stock markets in the US recorded a massive crash on Thursday, a day after US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries. S&P 500 fell 3.4%, putting it on track for its worst day since September 2022. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled nearly 1,400 points, or over 2%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite index fell 800 points.

Gold hits fresh all-time high, silver falls ₹1,000

Gold prices climbed ₹200 to hit a fresh peak of ₹94,350/10 grams in Delhi on Thursday, according to the All India Sarafa Association. The precious metal of 99.9% purity had stayed flat at ₹94,150/10 grams on Wednesday. However, silver prices plunged ₹1,000 to ₹1,00,500/kg from Wednesday's closing level of ₹1,01,500/kg.

Monkeys yodel better than humans: Research

A research published in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B' found that monkeys yodel better than humans. When yodelling, a human might be able to jump an octave, which doubles frequency, while monkeys can manage 3.5 octaves, according to the study. Monkeys have additional pair of membranes that gives them a far wider pitch range, the study found.

Can't accept verdict: Mamata Banerjee as SC fires 25,000 teachers in West Bengal

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said she respects the judiciary but can't personally accept Supreme Court's verdict of firing 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff. The top court said the entire selection process was "vitiated by manipulation and fraud". "We are with candidates on humanitarian grounds," she added. She also emphasised that candidates already employed needn't be asked for refunds.

In a first, all SC judges to make assets public after cash found at HC judge's home

All Supreme Court judges, including Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, agreed to voluntarily disclose their assets on the apex court's website for the first time, reports said on Thursday. This comes after large amount of cash was found at ex-Delhi HC judge Yashwant Varma's residence. Thirty judges have reportedly declared their assets which are yet to be made public.

NDA needs 119 votes to pass the Bill.
