UN elects 5 countries as Security Council non-permanent members

The UN General Assembly on Wednesday elected five countries to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council with two-year terms beginning in January 2027. The countries are Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe. They will join non-permanent members elected last year, Bahrain, Colombia, DR Congo, Latvia and Liberia. UNSC has a total of 15 permanent members.
