The first complete reading of a Herculaneum scroll, burnt to carbon during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago has been achieved by researchers with the help of AI and advanced imaging. The Vesuvius Challenge has offered $1 million to read in ​full any other scroll. The Roman city of Pompeii had been destroyed in the eruption.
