Two Rajasthani folk artists, Gafruddin Mewati Jogi and Taga Ram Bheel, were honoured with Padma Shri in 2026 under ‘unsung heroes’ category. Jogi, who plays the bhapang, belongs to the Mewati Jogi community, a mix of Hindus and Muslims, and knows over 2,500 couplets depicting Mahabharata stories. Bheel plays the algoza and has been performing since the age of 10.
