US govt eyes paying married parents $9,000 to stay home with kids

US government is considering allowing married couples with a stay-at-home spouse to receive childcare subsidies, The NYT reported. Eligible couples could qualify if one spouse works at least 35 hours weekly while the other cares for their child. Funding would come from the $12 billion Child Care and Development Fund, which typically provides about $9,000 per child annually.
