Extinct American cheetah species closely related to Puma: Study
A study published in 'Current Biology' found that the extinct 'American cheetah' which lived in Canadian Arctic 30,000 years ago was more closely related to modern pumas. Researchers studying ancient fossil DNA found that American cheetahs and pumas were sister species which diverged around 2.6 million years ago. Fossils also suggested American Cheetahs fed on fishes and terrestrial herbivores.
