The threshold for a heatwave is met when the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40°C in the plains, 37°C in the coastal areas and at least 30°C in the hilly regions. Along with this, departure from normal should be at least 4.5°C to 6.4°C. A severe heatwave is declared if departure from normal temperature exceeds 6.4°C.
